A Disney vacation is very different than any other trip you will take. Whether you are visiting for one day, a week, or more, there is a lot to learn to have the most magical trip possible. Disney World is expensive, so you want to make sure you prepare ahead of time to use all the time you have to enjoy your vacation. If you are traveling to Disney World for the first time, then you should be aware of these rookie mistakes and how to avoid them.
14 Mistakes to Avoid in Disney World
1. Not Creating a Budget
There’s no denying that Disney World is expensive. Prior to planning your trip, make sure you set a budget. You should also be budgeting how much you want to spend while actually in Disney World. From souvenirs, to food, make sure you have an idea of how much you are willing to spend to avoid added stress or surprises during your trip.
2. Not Making a Schedule
Now you don’t need to schedule every minute of everyday, but have a basic idea of what parks your going to, Lightning Lanes you want, and where to eat each day. If it is important to maximize your time in the parks, then planning ahead of time lets you have more fun and less planning while you are actually on your vacation.
3. Not Dressing Comfortably
If you just want that perfect instagram picture, then by all means, dress however you want, BUT comfort is the key in Disney World. If you are planning on having full days in the parks, then please, make sure you dress accordingly. Bring layers for cooler mornings, evenings, and air-conditioning. Wear quick dry clothes to wick sweat from the heat and water from certain rides. And, of course, wear comfortable footwear! Comfortable outfits are easy to make into cute Disney themed outfits. Add a pair of Minnie Ears, Disney bound, wear cute t-shirts, or match as a family! There are so many options.
4. Not Taking Breaks
Rest is key for a successful Disney World vacation. Especially if you are traveling with kids or it is hot out, which is most days out of the year. I suggest getting out of the park for some down time each day. And if you are going for more than a couple of days, taking at least an entire day without going to the parks to enjoy your resort or Disney Springs, is also great.
5. Only Brining One Pair of Shoes
Bring more than one pair of shoes to rotate if you get blisters or your feet get sore. Florida is known for heavy rainstorms, especially in the summer months, so it’s also a good idea to bring at least two pairs of shoes in case one pair gets wet. Make sure all the shoes you bring are comfortable and broken in prior to your trip.
6. Not Using the My Disney Experience App
It is almost impossible to go to Disney World without downloading the My Disney Experience Mobile App.This app is your guide to all things Disney while you are there. It holds your hotel information, lightning lanes and virtual queues, dining reservations, mobile orders, mobile checkout, and SO much more.
7. Not Researching Genie + or How Lightning Lanes Work
If you are unfamiliar with Disney’s Genie + and what Lightning Lanes are, then research prior to your trip. Disney’s Genie + is an additional cost for each guest per day that can only be purchased the day of. This has replaced the old FastPass system and allows you to skip the lines for rides and shows. Determine if this is part of your budget, if you want to purchase it each day, and what rides to prioritize Lightning Lanes for.
8. Not Knowing Ahead of Time Which Rides Use the Virtual Queue System
Virtual Queues are different than Lightning Lanes. Join these virtual queues for select rides in the four Disney Theme Parks. If a ride has a virtual queue, it is important to note that there is no regular stand by line to wait in. Virtual queues are available to join at 7 AM and again at 1 PM.
9. Not Doing things Outside of the Theme Parks
There is so much to see and do inside the parks, but many don’t realize that there is also plenty to do outside of them. If you are staying at a Disney Resort Hotel. there are many amenities to enjoy, including incredible pools. There is Disney Springs to enjoy shopping, shows, and amazing food. The Boardwalk offers both day and nighttime fun for the whole family. Ride surrey bikes, play boardwalk themed games, shop, eat, and dance. There are also water parks, miniature golf, and more!
10. Not Allowing Time to Get From Place to Place on Disney Property
If you are using the free transportation provided by Disney, then give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to go, especially if you have a reservation or Lighting Lane. No matter which form of Disney transportation you are taking, there could be delays, so I suggest giving yourself at least an hour to get from place to another to ensure you don’t miss any reservations. You can always book a Lyft or Uber, but those can still take time, especially if it is peak season.
11. Not Leaving Room for Souvenirs in Your Suitcase
If you have self control, then props to you, but I do not. It is inevitable that I will be coming home with souvenirs each time I visit Disney. If you’re like me, then be sure to leave room (both physical space and weight) in your suitcase to transport all of your treasures home.
12. Not Bringing a Rain Poncho
Rainstorms are VERY common in Central Florida. In the spring and summer, expect at least one a day in the afternoon. Just because it’s raining, it doesn’t mean you need to leave the parks. The storms don’t last too long and it’s a great time to get some rides in since crowds tend to diminish during the rain. Just pack a lightweight poncho and throw it on during the storm. There are some available for purchase in the parks, but they will be MUCH more expensive than if you just bring your own.
13. Skipping the Slow Moving Dark Rides
These are Disney classics! Sure, enjoy the innovative thrill rides, but don’t skip the classics. From Pirates to Small World, there are so many. They are great for kids, to cool off and relax, and even to allow you to appreciate Walt’s vision for the theme parks. They bring back so much nostalgia and are such feel good rides. At least go on a couple during your trip, please!
14. Only Eating Traditional “Theme Park” Foods
Of course Disney has the classic theme park foods, like burgers, chicken tenders, churros, and pretzels, but there is also SO much more. There are hundreds of food locations with all different types of foods. From fine dining and character dining experiences, to counter service meals and delicious snacks. There is something for everyone and so many options. Most of the food/ restaurants have unique theming to create the ultimate Disney experience.
